Tagua Balsa Palo Santo

Balsa Trees and Balsawood

Ecuadorian Balsawood (Ochroma Pyramidale) is the best in the world no doubts about it. Ecuador exports 95% of this wood to the world. This is due to its light weight ratio to strentgh. Balsawood Trees grow very fast and any proper ( Ecuador-Guayas basin) plantation needs only around 6-10 years to be ready to cut. This tree actually helps preserve the canopy of the tropical forest. So, its very ecological to use Balsa in many aplications as airplane, boats, cars, surfboards, wind turbine propellers, and even in rocket NASA techology. Balsa has very good insulation properties as well. Ecuador balsawood has been chosen by China govermment to be their main supplier recently due to its great qualities and price.

BALSA SAP CORE AND CRACK

As you can see in this photo, balsawood logs come with a center sap core which has very soft wood which is useless for any purposes but for cork industry. Because of this soft core and general cracks along the logs or blocks, only certain parts of the log can be use and to certain lengths. With these in mind, Logs comes in different thickness and lenghts as one saws and trims the lengths of balsa.

BALSA HEARTS

As happens in other woods, Balsa trees also have hearts and this needs to be avoided to have best flexibility or quality according to aplication.

RARE OVER 6 FEET LONG SHEETS OF 3 MM. THICK

To make sheets we use different types of Balsa colors and densities (weight ratio) according to thickness and length. We work with one of the best and only ones in Ecuador still producing Balsa sheets for many aplications, especially for the architectural models. Balsa comes in different grades of density and colors. Very light and white colors are the most expensive. Recently the demand for light/white balsa has grown exponentially. So prices keep increasing. Prices come in Boardfeet (BFT). A BFT.= 1inchx1inchx1feet. To be able to get this special sizes we need very dry wood and dryin process is done in a special way. The cutting only done manually on Band Saw.

END CORE SHEETS FOR THE HULL AND WINDTURBINE INDUSTRY

We work with medium size only factories and directly with owners. Our prices will be hard to beat and quality control because we have total access to all levels of production. We can even check Ovens for wood drying procedures. Most of our factories owner own their Balsawood plantation so rotten wood is checked out right away from process.
